Friends Friday | Adam Campbell

Hi guys! Today on Friends Friday, I am featuring a dear friend in the industry, Adam Campbell. If I only had three words to describe Adam, they would be hilarious, sweet, and uber talented. Seriously, this guy is a hair wizard. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including Kate Hudson and Angelina Jolie. If you are an aspiring hair stylist or just a fan, you should check out his interview below!

How long have you been in the industry?

I got my start in the beauty industry working in a buddy’s salon, when I was 18 years old, as a receptionist. When finishing high school I was undecided where my life plan was headed, but my mom had made it clear to me that I needed to work or go to college. I started cosmetology school when I was 19 and have been doing hair ever since.

What drew you to pursuing a career in hair full time?

While working in my buddy’s salon as a receptionist I was able to see that people could actually make a career out of “hairstyling.” I was really attracted to the creativity, flexibility, and ability to be my own boss. In retrospect, I realized that as a child, I was always interested in hair, playing with the hair of any friend or family member that would let me.

Describe your first professional experience in 3 words.

Intense, chaotic, fun.

What does your day to day as a celebrity hair stylist look like?

The first thing I do when I wake up every morning is ask myself what would “Celebrity Makeup Artist” Jaime Greenberg  do (WWCMAJBD?) Hahaha! Just kidding. I feel like my day is pretty normal to anyone else’s day. Wake up, coffee, walk the dog, check emails, gym, get ready for work. I work a lot, 6-7 days per week, either in the salon or on freelance jobs. Usually I finish my days by collapsing from being totally exhausted or out to dinner with a close friend. Other times I have had some pretty extraordinary days with some of my clients, getting to travel the world over and see places I would never have otherwise seen.

What/ who is a daily inspiration for you?

I listen to Abraham Hicks almost every morning on YouTube. It helps keep me focused on living for a higher purpose and finding the joy in everything.

What are two everyday hair tricks that anyone can incorporate into their daily routine?

  1.  Wrap your hair in a loose bun at night to get nice waves by morning.
  2. Dry Shampoo can fix almost anything… ALMOST.

What is an absolute DON’T for hair care?

  1. Don’t wait to long between haircuts.
  2. Do not condition at your scalp.
  3. Don’t forget to rinse shampoo/conditioner throughly, even when you think you’re done, rinse some more. Any product residue will weigh the hair down and make it feel dirty more quickly. (I don’t know why I gave 3 answers LOL)

What three products would you most highly recommend?

  1. Inphenom Shampoo… should be used by everyone.
  2. Oribe Dry Texture spray (duh)
  3. L’Oreal Elnett hairspray (old school)

What advice would you give to others who have the desire to pursue a career in hair?

Do it! Work hard and don’t listen to anyone who tells you you can’t follow your dreams.

What has been the most challenging & rewarding parts about your career?

I feel like the most challenging thing about doing something creative was learning to trust my own instincts, and not let others or my own limitations prevent me from achieving my dreams. The most rewarding was learning how much a haircut or a smile or a conversation could someone and help them have a better day.
